Международная группа астрономов обнаружила редкую планетарную туманность внутри рассеянного звездного скопления M37, которая является самой древней планетарной туманностью из известных. Об открытии сообщается в статье, опубликованной в журнале Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Планетарная туманность представляет собой облако ионизированного газа, окружающего белый карлик. Во Млечном Пути известно около четырех тысяч планетарных туманностей, однако объект IPHASX J055226.2+323724 является лишь третьей туманностью, связанной с рассеянным скоплением.
IPHASX J055226.2, как и две другие планетарные туманности в рассеянных скоплениях, является биполярной, то есть имеет форму бабочки. Она также обладает химическим составом I типа, то есть обогащена элементами тяжелее гелия. Все это указывает на то, что звезда-прародитель обладала массой около 2,8 массы Солнца.
Кинематический возраст туманности оценивается в 70 тысяч лет, что основано на скорости расширения туманности при допущении, что скорость практически не изменилась с самого начала, когда родительская звезда впервые сбросила внешнюю газовую оболочку. Считается, что типичная продолжительность жизни газовой туманности достигает 5-25 тысяч лет. Увеличенная продолжительность жизни может объясняться расположением туманности в звездном скоплении.
